Return to the USNS UPSHUR

On March 16, 1998, thirty-two years after the USNS Upshur transported the men of the 174th AHC from San Francisco to Qui Nhon, Vietnam, a few of the 174th veterans made a trip to Mobile, Alabama, where the Upshur is currently moored, to visit her once again. Three of the 174th's "boat people" made the trip, accompanied by Warren Hewetson, president of the 174th Fan Club. Bernie Cobb and Bob Kovelskie made the trip on the Upshur, which transported only personnel, while Ted Saunders accompanied the unit's helicopters at the same time but aboard the Point Cruz, a "flat-top" of sorts specialized for transporting equipment. This visit to the Upshur was made EXACTLY 32 years to the DAY (March 16, 1966) after Bernie and Kove boarded her in San Francisco bay (Oakland, actually) for Vietnam.
